Merge tags allow you to personalize your emails and reminders with dynamic content and subject lines. When you insert a merge tag into your email, it will be replaced with the content that is stored for the corresponding field. For example, if you use the {!PARENT-FIRST-NAME!} in the body of the content, it will be replaced by the first name of the parent that is receiving the email. In the following sections, you can learn how to use and access the merge tags.
When you are sending an email or a reminder, in the email body or the subject line section, click on the i icon.
You will see a list of available merge tags. The number of the displayed merge tags in the list depends on the type of campaign that is being set up. If you are sending a reminder campaign, you will see the entire list of merge tags.
But if you are sending an email campaign, you will see a limited number of merge tags, as seen in the image below.
Copy the merge tag by clicking on the copy icon next to the merge tag that you wish to use and paste it where you want, in the email body or the subject line.
You can also type the merge tag but remember to keep the same format as in the displayed list. If you misspell the name of a tag, you will receive an error message such as the one shown below when you go to the next step.
Correct | Incorrect | Error message |
{!PARENT-FIRST-NAME!} | {!ARENT-FIRST-NAME!} | Error: The following parameter is invalid: {!ARENT-FIRST-NAME!} |
{!PARENT-FIRST-NAME!} | {!PARENTFIRST-NAME!} | Error: The following parameter is invalid: {!PARENTFIRST-NAME!} |
Always pay attention that you have provided the begin {! signs and the end !} signs. If you forget to include one of these, you will not receive any error messages. We will not substitute the underlying value and the tag name will show up in the email. For example, if you type PARENT-FIRST-NAME!} instead of {!PARENT-FIRST-NAME!} then the recipient will see PARENT-FIRST-NAME!} instead of the parent?s first name.
Note: If you want to bold a merge tag, bold the entire name including the {! signs.
By paying attention to the name of a merge tag, you should be able to understand what this tag represents. For example, {!PARENT-FIRST-NAME!} will be substituted with the first name of the parent who is receiving the email. The table below lists the supported merge tags and indicates the underlying data field from which the information is pulled and substituted for.

Before sending out your email, we highly recommend that you send a test email to yourself to ensure you have correctly set up the merge tags. Please note that in the test email we will substitute the values for the merge tags based on one of the sample recipients.
Note: We will always send an email to the login email address of the recipient. In addition, if you have collected the email addresses of the parents in the registration forms, we will also include these emails in the campaign. Note that for the login email address, we do not have an associated name. However, the additional parent emails should have the first and last names.
